When Does School Start in Metro Atlanta 2026?

Last updated: July 7, 2026. This guide uses reviewed 2026-2027 district calendar data from the Georgia School Calendar site.

Most major Metro Atlanta school districts start the 2026-2027 school year on Monday, August 3, 2026. That group includes Atlanta Public Schools, Fulton County Schools, Cobb County School District, DeKalb County School District, Cherokee County School District, and Henry County Schools.

The two exceptions are big enough to matter. Gwinnett County Public Schools starts on Wednesday, August 5, 2026. Forsyth County Schools starts on Thursday, August 6, 2026.

For much of Metro Atlanta, August 3 is the date to build around. Gwinnett and Forsyth families need two or three extra weekdays of childcare before students return. Families comparing more than one district need to pay even closer attention to fall break, because that is where the calendars really split.

The Real Back-to-School Split

The date most families write down first is August 3. That is the main Metro Atlanta start date for 2026.

The mistake is assuming Gwinnett and Forsyth follow that Monday start. They do not. Gwinnett students start two days later. Forsyth students start three days later. That sounds small until a parent is trying to cover Monday through Wednesday with no camp, no school, and a work calendar that already assumes summer is over.

Those extra weekdays also create awkward sibling schedules. A family with one child in Cobb and one in Gwinnett has one child starting Monday and another still at home until Wednesday. A family split between Fulton and Forsyth has an even wider gap. Treat August 3-6 as a staggered start week, not a single first day.

Fall break is where the Metro calendars stop matching. Spring Break lines up across these major districts, but Fall Break does not. Fulton, Cobb, and Cherokee break in late September. Forsyth follows one week later. Henry and DeKalb take early October. Gwinnett and APS land later in October. A family that books a fall trip based on a neighboring district can miss the actual week by two or three weeks.

District-by-District Notes

Atlanta Public Schools

Atlanta Public Schools starts on Monday, August 3, 2026, and ends on Thursday, May 27, 2027. APS is simple on the first day, but its October pattern deserves attention: teacher professional learning days fall on October 12-13, followed by Fall Break on October 14-16. For students, that creates a full week away from regular classes from October 12 through October 16.

APS also lists PreK-12 early release days on September 21, 2026 and March 15, 2027. Those are not holidays. They are school days with shortened schedules, which makes them more disruptive for pickups than they look on a quick calendar scan.

Fulton County Schools

Fulton County Schools also starts on Monday, August 3, 2026. Fulton ends on Thursday, May 27, 2027.

Fulton's Fall Break lands early: September 21-23, followed by professional development or teacher workdays on September 24-25. Students are out the full week of September 21-25. That week is much earlier than APS, DeKalb, Gwinnett, or Henry, so Fulton families cannot use "Atlanta-area fall break" as shorthand when coordinating with relatives or sports teams in other districts.

Fulton has a remote learning/elections day on November 3, 2026. Put it on the childcare calendar even though it is not a holiday.

Cobb County School District

Cobb County School District starts on Monday, August 3, 2026. Cobb's last day is Wednesday, May 19, 2027, noticeably earlier than several nearby systems.

Cobb's Fall Break is September 21-25, matching Cherokee's week and lining up closely with Fulton student time off. Cobb's Digital Learning Days are August 17, October 12, December 1, and March 1. Put them in a separate bucket from holidays: students are home, but the day still carries school expectations.

Cobb also has early release for all levels on December 17-18 and May 17-19. The final week of school is short in more than one sense: it ends early in the month compared with other districts, and the last three student days have early release.

DeKalb County School District

DeKalb County School District starts on Monday, August 3, 2026, and ends on Thursday, May 27, 2027.

DeKalb's Fall Break is October 6-9, with a teachers' virtual workday on October 5. For students, that creates an October 5-9 week away from in-person school. DeKalb also marks November 3 as an Independent Learner/Professional Development Day and March 15 as a Professional Development Day. Those labels matter because they break the normal school-day routine even when the district is not calling them holidays.

DeKalb also lists inclement weather days on November 23-24 and April 5-6. Those dates sit inside Thanksgiving Break and Spring Break on the calendar. For DeKalb parents, those dates are warning lights: they can become makeup days if the district needs them.

Cherokee County School District

Cherokee County School District starts on Monday, August 3, 2026. The last student day is Tuesday, May 25, 2027.

Cherokee's Fall Break is September 21-25, so it lines up with Cobb and overlaps Fulton's student break week. Cherokee adds a student holiday and teacher planning day on October 12, then elementary school early release and conference days from October 13-16. That means October is not a clean month even after the September break has passed.

Cherokee also lists a remote learning day and teacher planning day on November 3, 2026, plus another remote learning day and teacher planning day on March 9, 2027. Those dates belong on the family calendar as disruption days, not vacation days.

Henry County Schools

Henry County Schools starts on Monday, August 3, 2026, and ends on Wednesday, May 26, 2027.

Henry's Fall Break is October 5-9. That puts it close to DeKalb's October break and one week before Gwinnett's. Henry also uses asynchronous learning days on September 4, October 2, November 3, February 12, and March 19. Those are not casual days off. They change the parent schedule because students are not following a normal campus day, but the school year still treats them as learning days.

Henry's winter return is also different from several districts. Students return for the second semester on January 6, 2027, one day later than APS, Fulton, DeKalb, Cherokee, and Gwinnett.

Gwinnett County Public Schools

Gwinnett County Public Schools is the largest district in this group, and it does not start on August 3. Gwinnett starts on Wednesday, August 5, 2026, and ends on Wednesday, May 26, 2027.

For Gwinnett parents, the two-day delay is the headline. August 3 and August 4 are still pre-planning and staff development days, not student days. If your workplace, childcare provider, or family calendar assumes "Atlanta schools start August 3," Gwinnett is the exception that breaks the plan.

Gwinnett's Fall Break is October 12-16. It lines up more closely with APS than with Fulton, Cobb, or Cherokee. Gwinnett also has Digital Learning Days on September 18, November 3, and March 19, plus grade-band early release dates in October, March, December, and May.

Forsyth County Schools

Forsyth County Schools starts later than every other district in this table. The first day is Thursday, August 6, 2026. The last day is Thursday, May 27, 2027.

For Forsyth families, the first week of August is a transition week, not a normal school week. Middle school open house is listed on August 3, elementary open house on August 4, and preplanning on August 5. Students start August 6.

Forsyth's Fall Break is September 28 through October 2, which sits between the Fulton/Cobb/Cherokee late-September break and the Henry/DeKalb/Gwinnett October breaks. Forsyth also gives more detailed early release times by school level than many districts, which helps parents plan pickups with less guesswork.

What This Means for Working Parents

The first week of August is the pressure point. Camps are winding down, after-school programs may not be fully active yet, and many employers still treat "back to school" as a single date. In Metro Atlanta for 2026, it is not a single date.

If your household is in APS, Fulton, Cobb, DeKalb, Cherokee, or Henry, Monday, August 3 is the student return date. If your household is in Gwinnett, plan coverage for August 3-4. If your household is in Forsyth, plan coverage through August 5.

The hardest calendars belong to split households: divorced or shared-custody families, families moving between districts, siblings in different systems, or parents who work in one district while their children attend another. In those homes, a one-page family calendar beats a dozen reminder emails. Put the first day, fall break, Thanksgiving, winter return, spring break, early release days, and digital or remote learning days on one sheet.

Digital learning, remote learning, asynchronous learning, and independent learner days deserve their own color. They can create the same childcare problem as a closure while still carrying assignments, check-ins, or attendance expectations. Mark those dates as "student at home" days, not vacation days.

The Date Families Are Most Likely to Misread

The first day gets the search volume. Fall Break creates more real-world mistakes.

Here is the spread for 2026:

  • Fulton, Cobb, and Cherokee: late September
  • Forsyth: late September into early October
  • Henry and DeKalb: early October
  • Gwinnett and APS: mid-October

That is not a small variation. It is a month-long spread across nearby districts. A parent can live in Cobb, work in Gwinnett, have cousins in Fulton, and play on a club team with DeKalb families. "Fall Break" will mean different weeks to those people.

Spring Break is easier for this group. The major districts in this article list Spring Break as April 5-9, 2027. That alignment makes spring travel simpler. Fall travel needs more care.
