2026-2027 Metro Atlanta School Calendar Comparison

Last updated: July 7, 2026. This guide uses reviewed 2026-2027 district calendar data from the Georgia School Calendar site.

The 2026-2027 Metro Atlanta school calendars line up on the big spring dates, but they split hard in the fall and on disruption days. Spring Break is April 5-9, 2027 for the major districts in this guide. Thanksgiving Break is November 23-27, 2026 across the group. Most winter breaks run December 21, 2026 through January 4, 2027, with Henry students returning one day later on January 6 after a semester break through January 5.

The real planning problem is Fall Break, digital learning, remote learning, asynchronous learning, teacher workdays, and early release. Fulton, Cobb, and Cherokee are off in late September. Forsyth is off the following week. Henry and DeKalb have early October student time away from regular school. Gwinnett and Atlanta Public Schools land later in October.

Asking only "when is break?" misses the part that burns parents. These calendars differ on student-at-home assignment days, shortened days, and teacher or professional-development days that disrupt normal pickup without looking like holidays.

The table shows the clean dates. The messy work sits underneath it: digital learning, remote learning, asynchronous days, early release, and professional-development student holidays.

School Breaks That Line Up Across Major Districts

Three parts of the 2026-2027 calendars line up cleanly.

First, Thanksgiving week lines up. The major districts in this guide list Thanksgiving Break as November 23-27, 2026. That gives families a full-week planning window across APS, Fulton, Cobb, DeKalb, Cherokee, Henry, Gwinnett, and Forsyth.

Second, Spring Break lines up. The covered districts list April 5-9, 2027 as Spring Break. For families crossing district lines, it is the cleanest travel week on the calendar.

Third, most winter breaks share the same core dates: December 21, 2026 through January 4, 2027. Henry is the exception: its semester break runs through January 5, with students returning January 6. That one-day difference matters; Fall Break is still the bigger mess.

For cross-district families, Thanksgiving week and Spring Break are the safe zones. Use those weeks for trips, custody exchanges, and grandparent visits before you trust Fall Break.

Where Metro Atlanta School Breaks Split

Fall Break is the first real fault line.

Fulton, Cobb, and Cherokee sit in the late-September cluster. Fulton students are out the week of September 21-25. Cobb is closed September 21-25. Cherokee also has Fall Break September 21-25. Those three calendars are the easiest fall-break match.

Forsyth sits alone in the next slot: September 28-October 2. That looks close on paper, but for working parents it is a separate week. A Forsyth family coordinating with Cobb or Fulton relatives is already off by one full workweek.

Henry and DeKalb create the early-October cluster. Henry's Fall Break is October 5-9. DeKalb students do not report October 5-9, with October 5 labeled as a teachers' virtual workday/professional-development day and October 6-9 labeled as Fall Break.

Gwinnett and APS land later. Gwinnett's Fall Break is October 12-16. APS students are also away from regular classes October 12-16, with professional learning days on October 12-13 and Fall Break on October 14-16.

This is not a minor local variation. It is nearly a month of staggered fall breaks across districts that families often treat as one metro area. A parent can live in Cobb, work in Gwinnett, have a co-parent in DeKalb, and play club sports with Forsyth families. "Fall Break" means different weeks in the same household network.

Teacher Workdays, Digital Learning Days, and Remote Learning

Do not read these labels as decoration. They decide whether a child is home, in class, online, or leaving early.

For Atlanta-area parents searching for teacher workdays, the phrase is only part of the picture. Districts use different labels for the same planning problem: professional-development day, teacher workday, digital learning day, remote learning day, asynchronous learning day, online learning day, or student holiday. The parent question is the same every time: is the child on a normal campus schedule or not?

District At-Home / Non-Regular School Days to Flag Parent Reading
APS Nov. 3 student holiday; Sep. 21 and Mar. 15 early release Fewer special labels than several nearby districts, but early release still needs pickup planning.
Fulton Oct. 12 and Mar. 15 student holidays; Nov. 3 remote learning/elections Nov. 3 is the date to flag because it changes the normal school routine without being a break week.
Cobb Digital Learning Days on Aug. 17, Oct. 12, Dec. 1, and Mar. 1 Cobb has one of the clearest digital-learning patterns. Treat those dates as home-supervision days.
DeKalb Nov. 3 independent learner/professional development; Mar. 15 professional development; makeup-day notes Nov. 23-24 and Apr. 5-6 DeKalb's weather makeup notes sit inside holiday periods. Treat them as warning lights.
Cherokee Remote Learning Days on Nov. 3 and Mar. 9; Oct. 12 student holiday Remote learning is not vacation. Students have school expectations.
Henry Asynchronous Learning Days on Sep. 4, Oct. 2, Nov. 3, Feb. 12, and Mar. 19 Henry has the most explicit asynchronous pattern in this group. Put those days in a separate calendar color.
Gwinnett Digital Learning Days on Sep. 18, Nov. 3, and Mar. 19 Gwinnett's digital days get buried under the later start date. Mark them separately.
Forsyth K-12 online learning/parent conferences on Oct. 16 and Mar. 12; professional development days Oct. 19 and Mar. 15 Forsyth stacks online learning, conferences, and professional development near break periods.

A normal holiday tells a parent one thing: school is closed. Digital, remote, asynchronous, and online learning days tell a parent two things at once: the student is home or off the normal campus schedule, and school expectations remain.

Do not treat those days as soft holidays. They hit working parents almost as hard as closures, but they do not always give students a clean day off.

Early Release Is the Hidden Pickup Problem

Early release is quieter than Fall Break and meaner on a workday. A full break is obvious. Early release gets missed until the midday reminder lands.

APS lists PreK-12 early release on September 21, 2026 and March 15, 2027. Those are simple to mark because they apply broadly.

Cobb has a heavier early-release pattern. Elementary and middle schools release early October 13-16. All levels release early December 17-18 and May 17-19. Cobb also ends earlier than the other major districts in this guide, with the last day on May 19, 2027.

Cherokee has elementary early release October 13-16, early release for all levels January 28-29, modified dismissal for middle and high schools December 18, and modified dismissal on the last student day, May 25.

Gwinnett splits early release by grade band. Elementary and middle schools release early October 28-29 and March 3-4. High schools release early for exams December 16-18 and May 24-26.

Forsyth has early release on September 4, December 16-18, May 24-27, with some dates tied specifically to high school exams and others marked for all K-12 students.

Henry lists early release on December 18 and again on the last day, May 26.

Early release is annoying with one child and ugly with children in different schools. Do not put it in the same color as holidays. Give it its own label. A child who gets out two or three hours early creates a different problem from a child who is out all day.

Parent Difficulty Table: Hardest Metro Atlanta Calendars

This is the table that matters after the clean dates are copied into the family calendar. It ranks the calendar headache, not the school system.

District Hardest Calendar Issue Why It Matters Parent Difficulty
Cobb County School District Digital Learning Days plus early-release clusters Cobb has Digital Learning Days on Aug. 17, Oct. 12, Dec. 1, and Mar. 1, plus early release in October, December, and May. High
Henry County Schools Five asynchronous learning days Sep. 4, Oct. 2, Nov. 3, Feb. 12, and Mar. 19 are not ordinary holidays. They can put students at home while school expectations remain. High
Gwinnett County Public Schools Later start, Digital Learning Days, and grade-band early release The Aug. 5 start gets attention, but the Digital Learning Days and grade-band early releases are the dates that complicate workdays later. High
Forsyth County Schools Late start plus online learning/conferences and exam release Forsyth starts Aug. 6 and has K-12 online learning/parent conference days, professional-development days, and several exam-related early releases. High
Cherokee County School District Remote learning plus early release and modified dismissal Cherokee combines Remote Learning Days with elementary early release, all-level early release, and modified dismissal dates. Medium-high
DeKalb County School District Makeup-day notes inside break periods DeKalb marks possible inclement-weather makeup days inside Thanksgiving and Spring Break windows, so those dates deserve extra attention. Medium
Atlanta Public Schools October professional learning days plus Fall Break APS creates a full Oct. 12-16 student break pattern, but the early-release list is shorter than several nearby districts. Medium
Fulton County Schools Early Fall Break and Nov. 3 remote learning/elections Fulton is simpler than Cobb, Gwinnett, Henry, or Forsyth, but its Sept. 21-25 Fall Break arrives much earlier than many neighbors. Medium

The hardest calendars are the ones with scattered disruption days. A single full week off is visible. A digital day here, an early release there, and a conference/online-learning day near a break can do more damage to a work schedule than a clean vacation week.

The Hardest Calendars for Cross-District Families

The easiest cross-district dates are Thanksgiving and Spring Break. Those line up across the major districts in this guide. Winter break is also mostly aligned, with Henry's January return running one day later.

The hardest cross-district date is Fall Break. It is not close enough to wing it. September 21, September 28, October 5, and October 12 are four different Monday starting points for student time away from normal school routines. A family that guesses based on a neighboring district can miss the correct week entirely.

The hardest calendar is not always the one with the latest start date. Gwinnett and Forsyth start later than most major districts, but Cobb, Henry, Cherokee, Gwinnett, and Forsyth all need careful marking. Cobb has multiple Digital Learning Days and early-release clusters. Henry has five asynchronous days. Cherokee has remote learning plus early release and modified dismissal. Gwinnett has digital days and grade-band early release. Forsyth has online learning/conference days, professional-development days, and several exam-related early releases.

For a working parent, the best calendar is not the one with the fewest breaks. It is the one with the fewest surprises. A full week off is easier to plan around than scattered shortened days that appear after pickup plans are set.

Build the family calendar in three layers:

  1. Major breaks: Fall, Thanksgiving, winter, February, spring.
  2. Student-at-home days: digital, remote, asynchronous, online learning, professional-development student holidays.
  3. Shortened days: early release, modified dismissal, exam release.

Those layers prevent the expensive mistake: treating every non-normal school day as the same childcare problem.

How to Use This Comparison

Use the table for the comparison. Use the district page for the full calendar, PDF downloads, ICS calendar imports, and source notes.

Use the right page for the job:

The strongest family calendar is not the prettiest one. It is the one that separates full closures, student-at-home learning days, and early release. That separation is what keeps a school calendar from turning into a string of last-minute pickup problems.

FAQ

Which Metro Atlanta districts start school on August 3, 2026?

Six major districts start on Monday, August 3, 2026: Atlanta Public Schools, Fulton County Schools, Cobb County School District, DeKalb County School District, Cherokee County School District, and Henry County Schools.

Which major districts start later than August 3, 2026?

Gwinnett and Forsyth start later than the August 3 cluster. Gwinnett starts Wednesday, August 5, 2026, and Forsyth starts Thursday, August 6, 2026.

Are all major Metro Atlanta districts on the same Spring Break in 2027?

Yes. APS, Fulton, Cobb, DeKalb, Cherokee, Henry, Gwinnett, and Forsyth all list Spring Break as April 5-9, 2027.

Can I plan one Fall Break trip for kids in different Metro Atlanta districts?

Not unless the districts share the same Fall Break cluster. Fall Break is the biggest split in the 2026-2027 calendars. Fulton, Cobb, and Cherokee are in late September; Forsyth is September 28-October 2; Henry and DeKalb have early October student time away from regular school; Gwinnett and APS are later in October.

Which districts have at-home learning days that still need supervision?

Cobb, Gwinnett, Henry, Cherokee, and Forsyth are the supervision-heavy districts. Cobb and Gwinnett list Digital Learning Days, Henry lists Asynchronous Learning Days, Cherokee lists Remote Learning Days, and Forsyth lists online learning and parent conference days.

Which district has the most asynchronous learning dates?

Henry County Schools is the clear answer. Henry lists five Asynchronous Learning Days: September 4, October 2, November 3, February 12, and March 19.

Which districts have teacher workdays or professional-development days parents need to flag?

APS, DeKalb, and Forsyth are the clearest teacher-workday or professional-development flags. APS has professional learning days on October 12-13, DeKalb marks October 5, November 3, and March 15 with professional-development or related labels, and Forsyth lists professional-development days on October 19 and March 15.

Is February Break 2027 the same for every major district?

No. Most covered districts use February 15-19, 2027, but Gwinnett and Forsyth use February 12-16, 2027. That Friday-to-Tuesday pattern is easy to miss.

Which calendars create the most trouble for working parents?

Cobb, Henry, Gwinnett, and Forsyth create the most trouble for working parents. They combine major breaks with digital learning, asynchronous learning, online learning, early release, or grade-band release patterns. Scattered disruption days are harder to manage than one clean week off.

Should I treat early release days like regular school days?

No. Early release days need separate childcare planning because students attend part of the day, but pickup, after-school care, transportation, and work coverage still change.
