About Atlanta Public Schools
Atlanta Public Schools is organized around nine high-school clusters—Carver, Douglass, Jackson, Mays, Midtown, North Atlanta, South Atlanta, Therrell and Washington. The district’s 48,599 K–12 students do not move through a web of split feeders: APS describes each cluster so that an elementary school advances to one middle school and that middle school advances to one high school. For a neighborhood student, the cluster is the basic unit that connects an address to a complete K–12 path.
The cluster map is not the entire APS school system. District-authorized charter schools, single-gender academies and other choice settings enroll students through processes that differ from ordinary neighborhood assignment. Some appear alongside traditional schools in state directories even though they are not additional attendance zones. An Atlanta mailing address also does not by itself prove APS residency; portions of the broader Atlanta postal area lie in Fulton County Schools or DeKalb County School District.
APS is simultaneously planning a major facilities and redistricting transition. The APS Forward 2040 long-range facilities plan was approved in December 2025, and the district is using the 2026–27 year to organize transition teams, community redistricting and facility-repurposing work connected with closures, mergers and consolidations. Those activities matter, but a proposed or future receiving school should not be substituted for the student’s current cluster before the district publishes and implements the relevant assignment decision. Atlanta has to be read with two maps in mind: the operating cluster system now, and a formally managed future configuration still moving through transition work.
