About Richmond County School System

Richmond County School System served 27,719 K–12 students across Augusta and the surrounding county through eight comprehensive high schools: Academy of Richmond County, Cross Creek, Butler, Glenn Hills, Hephzibah, Laney, Josey and Westside. Those schools belong to the ordinary address-based network with assigned elementary and middle feeders.

Four dedicated magnet schools operate under different rules: A.R. Johnson Health Science and Engineering Magnet, C.T. Walker Traditional Magnet, Davidson Magnet and Richmond County Technical Career Magnet. They are not extra neighborhood zones. Admission is handled through the district’s school-choice process, and the grade spans and themes differ, so an accepted magnet placement must be distinguished from the comprehensive school assigned to the residence.

Fort Gordon creates another exception, but not the same one found at Georgia installations with DoDEA schools. Freedom Park is a Richmond County public K–8 school located on the base; it explicitly is not a Department of Defense school. Children of active-duty service members who live on post are zoned to Freedom Park, while eligible off-post military families in Richmond County may seek a zone waiver.

Richmond’s school list contains three systems at once: geographic feeders, application magnets and a locally operated on-post K–8 zone. The Fort Gordon campus remains under county governance, and the four magnets remain choice schools. Neither should be added to the eight comprehensive highs as though every name represented an equivalent residential cluster.
