About Rabun County Schools
Rabun County Schools keeps sixth grade in elementary school. Its 2,138 K–12 students move from Rabun County Primary through grade two to Rabun County Elementary for grades three through six, then spend only grades seven and eight at the middle school before entering Rabun County High.
That unusual ladder is only one part of Rabun County’s educational identity. Foxfire began in 1966 as a student-created magazine at Rabun Gap–Nacoochee School and moved to the newly built Rabun County High in 1977. The project grew into books, a museum and an influential place-based teaching model rooted in interviews with Appalachian residents.
Foxfire today is run by the independent Foxfire Fund as a separate cultural and educational organization. Its current Project Foxfire is a paid six-week summer program in journalism, oral history, media and heritage skills for a small group of high-school students. Rabun’s public feeder remains Primary through grade two, Elementary for grades three through six, Middle for seven and eight, and High for nine through twelve; Foxfire is a local educational legacy and selective summer opportunity, not a fifth district school.
