About Oconee County Schools
Oconee County Schools enrolled 8,411 K–12 students in two comprehensive high-school zones, North Oconee and Oconee County, supported by three middle schools and several elementary routes. Most younger students attend one K–5 campus, but the Watkinsville-area sequence is age-banded: Oconee County Primary serves the early grades and Oconee County Elementary receives grades three through five.
That pair is not a duplicate of the full-span elementary schools at Colham Ferry, Dove Creek, High Shoals, Malcom Bridge or Rocky Branch. A child assigned to the Primary route must change campuses after second grade, while a child at one of the K–5 schools normally remains through fifth. Elementary assignment determines both location and the timing of the first school transition.
The middle-school layer also reflects recent growth. Dove Creek Middle opened in August 2023 as the district’s third middle school, joining Malcom Bridge and Oconee County Middle. Oconee is now a two-high, three-middle system with two different kinds of elementary route. The new middle school and the Primary-to-Elementary pairing are structural facts, not optional program labels.
