About Charlton County Schools

Charlton County Schools uses two markedly different elementary routes before its 1,528 K–12 students come together. Folkston Elementary serves children through grade four, after which they enter Bethune Middle for grades five through eight. St. George Elementary, located in the county’s southern community, keeps students through grade six; those students join Bethune only for grades seven and eight. Both groups then proceed to Charlton County High.

The middle-school span is not experienced in the same way across the county. A Folkston student spends four years at Bethune, while a St. George student spends only two. Grade five and grade six remain elementary grades in St. George but are middle-school grades in Folkston. A countywide notice addressed simply to “middle school students” needs the student’s home route before it can be interpreted correctly.

Charlton is also planning a replacement high-school facility. Construction and procurement notices describe the future campus, but the project should not be treated as an already operating school or a new attendance zone. The present feeder system still ends at the current Charlton County High. The district’s defining story is a mixed elementary-to-middle transition now, with a separate facilities change developing for the future.
