About Macon County School System
Macon County School System is not the public district for the city of Macon. Its 974 K–12 students attend Macon County Elementary in Oglethorpe, then Macon County Middle and Macon County High in Montezuma. The similarly named city lies in Bibb County and is served by Bibb County School District.
That geographic correction prevents families from confusing this rural county system with the large urban district in Macon. A search for “Macon schools” can lead a family toward a large urban system more than fifty miles away, while Macon County’s actual public network is a compact three-school ladder centered on Oglethorpe and Montezuma. The county name reflects the jurisdiction, not the location of the city of Macon.
Within the correct district, the route is direct: PK–5, 6–8 and 9–12. There is no separate Oglethorpe city school system or Montezuma high-school district to choose between. The elementary and secondary campuses occupy different county communities, but they belong to one governing system and one feeder sequence.
