About Gainesville City Schools
Gainesville City Schools gives each of its six regular K–5 schools an academy identity—arts, international studies, exploration, leadership or another instructional theme. Those titles do not mean that every elementary campus is a countywide open-choice magnet. The district’s 8,223 K–12 students first have a zoned elementary school, and a request to attend another academy is a separate transfer decision based on space and approval.
After fifth grade, students move into Gainesville Middle East or Gainesville Middle West and then share Gainesville High. Horizon Academy is a nontraditional grades 9–12 setting, not a second residential high-school zone. The ordinary secondary map has two middle campuses leading to one comprehensive high school.
Gainesville also admits some nonresident students through a tuition process, but city residents receive the basic attendance right. Hall County Schools surrounds the municipal district and uses many Gainesville postal addresses. The academy name, the postal city and the school district are three separate pieces of information: the home boundary establishes Gainesville City eligibility, the elementary zone identifies the guaranteed campus, and any transfer or tuition approval changes that route only through a formal decision.
