About Franklin County Schools
Franklin County Schools begins with three elementary communities—Carnesville, Lavonia and South Franklin—and then consolidates all 3,545 K–12 students at Franklin County Middle and Franklin County High. The town-centered elementary zones do not represent independent city systems; Lavonia, Royston-area families and the county seat all remain within the same county district.
South Franklin is also a recent addition to the operating map. Its new facility opened in January 2025, and the district used the added capacity to rezone the three elementary attendance areas for 2025–26. A boundary lookup saved before that process may still identify a real Franklin County school while assigning the wrong current campus.
The naming history can create another layer of confusion. Some state links and older material continue to use Royston Elementary, and portions of the school website still contain that former identity, while the operating district directory presents South Franklin Elementary. The current residence and assignment should govern, not whichever label appears first in a search result. After fifth grade, all three elementary routes meet in one countywide secondary sequence.
