About Floyd County Schools

Floyd County Schools does not have a common countywide definition of elementary, middle or high school. Its 8,519 K–12 students follow four community routes whose grade breaks differ sharply. In Armuchee, Primary serves the earliest grades, Elementary serves grades three through five, and Armuchee High begins in grade six and continues through grade twelve.

Coosa and Model use another pattern: elementary school continues through grade four, middle school covers grades five through seven, and high school begins in grade eight. Pepperell follows the same 5–7 middle and 8–12 high arrangement, but its younger students are divided between a PK–1 Primary and a grades 2–4 Elementary school. The building called High School contains middle-grade students in every Floyd community, though Armuchee starts much earlier than the other three.

These are ordinary feeder structures, not acceleration programs or optional junior highs. The home community determines whether a sixth-grader is in Armuchee High or in a middle school, and whether an eighth-grader is already in Coosa, Model or Pepperell High. Districtwide grade-level assumptions are especially unreliable here.

Rome City Schools operates independently inside Floyd County, while several county campuses use Rome mailing addresses. Residency must be resolved before applying any of the four unusual grade ladders. Floyd’s most important boundary is first between city and county systems, and then among community-specific definitions of each school level.
