Last updated: July 7, 2026. This preview uses official 2027-2028 district calendar data published by eleven Metro Atlanta school districts as of July 2026.
Eleven Metro Atlanta school districts have published official 2027-2028 calendars. Two major districts — Fulton County Schools and Clayton County Schools — have not yet released theirs. For the eleven that have, the headline findings are: Spring Break and Thanksgiving Break are perfectly aligned across all eleven districts, the February break is the most fragmented it has been in years with start dates spread across a 10-day window, and Paulding County ends Winter Break three weekdays earlier than every other district.
This article is a first-look preview, not a final planning guide. Douglas County's calendar is still a draft. Fulton and Clayton dates are not yet available. Before committing to non-refundable purchases, start with the What Parents Can Lock In Now section below. It separates dates that are strong enough for planning from dates that are not.

February Break: The Biggest Fragmentation Story
The 2027-2028 February break is the least synchronized major break period across Metro Atlanta. Four distinct windows create a 10-day spread between the earliest and latest start dates.
Gwinnett County: February 11-15, 2028. Gwinnett's February Student/Teacher Holidays run Friday through Tuesday. The Friday start means the break straddles two calendar weeks, and the Tuesday end means students return to school on Wednesday, February 16. This is the earliest February break in the metro area by nearly a full week. Gwinnett labels this block "February Student/Teacher Holidays" — not "Winter Break" — which is consistent with the 2026-2027 naming.
Rockdale County: February 14-18, 2028. Rockdale labels this week "Winter Intersession" — the only district using this term. The Monday-to-Friday block starts three days after Gwinnett's and ends one week before the main cluster. Rockdale's calendar designates intersession days as weather make-up days. The full five-day break is conditional on a mild winter. If the district uses one or more inclement weather closure days during the school year, intersession days convert to school days.
Forsyth County: February 18-22, 2028. Forsyth labels this block "Student Holiday" — not "Winter Break" — which is the same label it uses in 2026-2027. The Friday-to-Tuesday block overlaps partially with both Rockdale's window (sharing February 18) and the majority cluster (sharing February 21-22). This is a bridging window: Forsyth students start break two days before the February 21-25 cluster begins, and return two days before the cluster ends. Forsyth is the only district whose February break straddles two different metro windows, which means Forsyth families can align with either Rockdale or the majority cluster for part of the break but not the whole thing — no single travel window covers all of Forsyth's days plus another district's.
The February 21-25 cluster: Cobb, DeKalb, APS, Cherokee, Henry, Marietta City, CSD, and Paulding. Eight of the eleven official districts converge on this Monday-to-Friday window. For cross-district families that do not include Gwinnett, Rockdale, or Forsyth, the February break is fully aligned. For households with one child in any of these eight districts and another child in Gwinnett, Rockdale, or Forsyth, the break weeks do not fully overlap.
Douglas County (draft): February 21-24. Douglas shortens the break by one day, ending Thursday instead of Friday. This four-day break is flagged as a draft and subject to change.
What this means for parents. A family with one child in Gwinnett and another in Cobb faces two completely non-overlapping February breaks in 2027-2028: one child off February 11-15, the other off February 21-25. A single week of vacation cannot cover both. A family with one child in Rockdale and another in DeKalb faces a similar split: one off February 14-18, the other off February 21-25. A family with one child in Forsyth and another in Cherokee has the narrowest alignment problem: Forsyth is off February 18-22 and Cherokee is off February 21-25. Only February 21-22 overlap — the two districts share two weekdays of break out of five.
This fragmentation also affects travel pricing. The staggered weeks spread demand for flights and hotels across three weeks instead of one, reducing the price spikes that come with a fully synchronized break week. For multi-district families, the lack of overlap means either two separate trips or one child missing school.
Paulding County's Shorter Winter Break
Paulding County School District's 2027-2028 Winter Break runs December 20 through December 31, 2027 — three weekdays shorter than the December 20-January 3 standard followed by every other official district in this comparison.
The practical difference: Paulding students return to school on Monday, January 3, 2028. Every other district's students return on Tuesday, January 4, 2028 (Henry County returns January 5). One weekday sounds minor, but for families who book New Year's travel through the first weekend of January, a January 3 return means no buffer day between the holiday and the first day back.
Paulding is also the only district that shifted its Winter Break end date between 2026-2027 and 2027-2028. In 2026-2027, Paulding's Winter Break ended January 1, 2027, with a return on January 4. The 2027-2028 calendar ends break on December 31 instead of January 1, pulling the break one day shorter. The district has not published a reason for the change.
Paulding families booking December 2027 travel need a January 3 return date, not January 4. Multi-district families with one child in Paulding and another in Cobb, DeKalb, or any other district have an extra school day on January 3 for the Paulding child only.
What's Perfectly Aligned: Spring Break and Thanksgiving
Two major breaks are identical across all eleven official districts — and Douglas County's draft matches as well.
Spring Break: April 3-7, 2028 (Monday-Friday). Every official 2027-2028 calendar in this guide places Spring Break on the same five days. This is a full metro-wide alignment — no staggered weeks, no split schedules. For 2026-2027, Spring Break was also aligned at April 5-9, 2027, so this is the second consecutive year of synchronization.
The alignment has an upside and a downside. The upside: zero cross-district sibling conflicts for Spring Break week. The downside: every district's families are competing for the same flights, the same hotels, and the same camp slots. Spring Break 2028 will concentrate travel demand across the entire metro area onto a single week. Families who know their plans benefit from booking flights and hotels before the spring 2028 rush.
Thanksgiving Break: November 22-26, 2027 (Monday-Friday). All eleven districts close for the full Thanksgiving week. This is the most consistently aligned break in Georgia school calendars year after year, and 2027-2028 continues that pattern.
Winter Break start date: December 20, 2027. Every district in this guide starts Winter Break on the same Monday. The only variation is the end date (Paulding ends December 31; Henry ends January 4; everyone else ends January 3).
Notable Changes from 2026-2027
Gwinnett County. Digital Learning Days drop from three (2026-2027) to two (2027-2028). The November DLD is eliminated. The two remaining DLDs fall on September 17, 2027 and March 17, 2028. Elementary and middle school early release days shift to October 27-28 and March 1-2. First day moves from August 5 to August 4; last day moves from May 26 to May 24.
Cobb County. The 2027-2028 official calendar does not list Digital Learning Days or early release days. In 2026-2027, Cobb had four DLDs (August 17, October 12, December 1, March 1) and eight early release days spread across Conference Week (October 13-16), December (17-18), and the final three days of the school year (May 17-19). The 2027-2028 events array is empty. The calendar's intro text describes "school-closed days, student holidays, major breaks, and the last student day" without reference to DLDs or early release. First day shifts from August 3 to August 2. Last day is May 17 — once again the earliest close in metro Atlanta, a full week before most other districts.
DeKalb County. Inclement weather makeup days remain embedded inside Thanksgiving Break (November 22-23) and Spring Break (April 3-4) — the same structure as 2026-2027. Fall Break shifts one day earlier (October 4-8 instead of October 5-9). February Break moves from February 15-19 to February 21-25, a one-week shift that breaks alignment with the 2026-2027 February window but aligns with the 2027-2028 majority cluster. The November Professional Development Day moves from November 3 to November 2 (following the Election Day shift). First day moves from August 3 to August 2. Last day is May 25.
Atlanta Public Schools. Fall Break shifts from October 12-16, 2026 to October 11-15, 2027. February break shifts from February 15-19 to February 21-25 — the same one-week shift DeKalb made. First day moves from August 3 to August 2. Last day shifts from May 27 to May 26.
Forsyth County. Fall Break holds its unique window — September 27-October 1, 2027 — which remains distinct from both the late-September cluster (Cobb, Cherokee, Marietta, CSD, Paulding) and the early-October cluster (DeKalb, Henry, Rockdale) and the mid-October cluster (Gwinnett, APS). The February "Student Holiday" block moves from February 12-16, 2027 to February 18-22, 2028 — a shift of nearly one week. K-12 Online Learning / Parent Conferences remain on the calendar (October 15, 2027 and March 17, 2028) with the same label. First day shifts from August 6 to August 5.
Cherokee County. Fall Break shifts one day earlier (September 20-24 instead of September 21-25). February "Winter Break" block moves from February 15-19 to February 21-25. Remote Learning Days remain at two (November 2, 2027 and March 14, 2028) but shift one day earlier. Elementary-only early release conference days remain at four consecutive days (October 12-15, 2027). First day shifts from August 3 to August 2. Last day is May 24.
Henry County. "Semester Break" naming remains — the only district using this label. The Semester Break runs December 20, 2027 through January 4, 2028, returning January 5 — one day longer than the standard Winter Break. Five Asynchronous Learning Days remain: September 3, October 1, November 2, February 18, and March 17. First day shifts from August 3 to August 2. Last day shifts from May 26 to May 24.
Marietta City. Fall Break shifts one day earlier (September 20-24). Conference Week splits across two weeks: Elementary October 11-15, and MCAA/MSGA/MMS October 18-22 — each a full week of 1:15 p.m. dismissals. This is the largest conference-week early-release footprint in metro Atlanta for 2027-2028. First day shifts from August 5 to August 4. Last day is May 24.
City Schools of Decatur. "Semester Break" naming joins Henry as the only two districts using this label. Fall Break shifts to September 20-24, breaking from the 2026-2027 alignment with DeKalb. Indigenous Peoples' Day / Teacher Work Day lands on October 11. Election Day / Digital Learning Day falls on November 2. First day remains August 2. Last day is May 25.
Paulding County. The largest structural change: the label shifts from "Digital Learning Day" (2026-2027) to "Remote Learning Day" (2027-2028). Three Remote Learning Days are listed: September 3, October 15, and January 14. Fall Break shifts dramatically — from September 28-October 2, 2026 to September 20-24, 2027. Winter Break shortens, ending December 31 instead of January 1. First day remains August 3.
Rockdale County. "Winter Intersession" label for the February break remains — the only district using this term. The Intersession expands from four days (February 16-19 in 2027) to a full five-day Monday-Friday block (February 14-18, 2028). The Intersession days carry a weather make-up day designation, which means the five-day break is conditional. Independent Learning / PL Days drop from three to two (September 3 and October 25). Fall Break shifts one day earlier (October 4-8). Last day is May 26 — the only Friday last day among the official calendars.
Fall Break: The Four-Way Split Continues
Fall Break remains the most fragmented fall break period in any major U.S. metro area, and 2027-2028 continues the pattern. Four distinct windows:
September 20-24, 2027. Cobb, Cherokee, Marietta City, CSD, and Paulding. Five districts in the earliest window. Cobb labels this "School Closed." Paulding shifted into this window from the September 28-October 2 slot it occupied in 2026-2027, which is the largest Fall Break shift of any district between the two school years.
September 27-October 1, 2027. Forsyth County alone. Forsyth is the only district using this window, as it was in 2026-2027. The Forsyth Fall Break starts one week after the late-September cluster and one week before the early-October cluster, making it the least overlapping Fall Break in the metro area.
October 4-8, 2027. DeKalb, Henry, and Rockdale. Three districts. This window shifted one day earlier across all three (from October 5-9 in 2026-2027).
October 11-15, 2027. Gwinnett, APS, and Douglas County (draft). Three districts. This is the latest Fall Break window. Gwinnett shifted one day earlier (from October 12-16). APS shifted one day earlier (from October 12-16).
For cross-district families, the practical problem is the same as 2026-2027: a child in Cobb has Fall Break September 20-24, while a child in Gwinnett has Fall Break October 11-15. Three full school weeks separate the two breaks. A single family vacation cannot cover both.
End-of-Year Spread: May 17 to May 26
The 2027-2028 school year ends across a nine-day window, with Cobb closing earliest and Rockdale/APS closing latest.
| Date | Districts |
|---|---|
| May 17 (Wed) | Cobb |
| May 18 (Thu) | Douglas (draft) |
| May 24 (Wed) | Gwinnett, Cherokee, Henry, Marietta City, Paulding |
| May 25 (Thu) | DeKalb, Forsyth, CSD |
| May 26 (Fri) | APS, Rockdale |
Cobb's May 17 close is nine calendar days before APS and Rockdale's May 26 close. For a household with one child in Cobb and another in APS, the Cobb child starts summer on May 17 while the APS child attends school through May 26 — nine days of asymmetrical childcare. This is the same structural gap that exists in 2026-2027 (Cobb May 19 vs APS May 27).
Camp and summer program registration is directly affected. Programs that open the week of May 17 serve Cobb families but leave APS and Rockdale families with a coverage gap in the last week of May. Programs that start after Memorial Day leave Cobb families with a two-week gap between school closing and camp opening.
Five districts close on Wednesday, May 24. DeKalb, Forsyth, and CSD close Thursday, May 25. APS and Rockdale close Friday, May 26. The midweek close dates mean end-of-year activities — exams, early release, modified dismissal — concentrate in the final two to three school days for each district.
What's Still Unknown
Fulton County Schools has not published a 2027-2028 calendar. Fulton is the fourth-largest district in Georgia and a key reference point for north metro families. In 2026-2027, Fulton's calendar aligned Fall Break with Cobb and Cherokee (September 21-25) and February break with most of the metro (February 15-19). Until Fulton's 2027-2028 calendar is released, families who rely on Fulton dates for cross-district planning are working with incomplete information.
Clayton County Schools has not published a 2027-2028 calendar. Clayton is a major south metro district. In 2026-2027, Clayton's calendar stood out for ELBC dates (Early Learning Break Conversation days), a February 12-16 break aligned with Gwinnett, and a September 22-26 Fall Break.
Douglas County's calendar is a draft dated August 2025. The draft dates — particularly the shortened February 21-24 break and the May 18 last day — are not final. Booking non-refundable travel against Douglas County draft dates means accepting the risk that those dates shift when the board approves the final calendar.
What Parents Can Lock In Now
Some 2027-2028 dates are strong enough for planning because all eleven official calendars match. Others are not ready for booking.
Planning-ready for the eleven official districts in this preview:
- Spring Break 2028 travel: April 3-7, 2028. Every official calendar in this eleven-district set places Spring Break on this week. This is the strongest travel window in the preview.
- Thanksgiving 2027 travel: November 22-26, 2027. All eleven official districts align.
- Winter Break 2027 departure: December 20, 2027 is the first day of break across all eleven official districts. Departures on or after this date match the published calendars in this preview.
District-specific dates that need matching before booking:
- Winter Break 2027 return: January 4, 2028 for all districts except Paulding (January 3) and Henry (January 5). A January 4 return flight fits most districts in the table, but it does not fit Paulding or Henry.
- February Break 2028: The eight-district majority cluster runs February 21-25 (Cobb, DeKalb, APS, Cherokee, Henry, Marietta City, CSD, Paulding). Gwinnett uses February 11-15. Rockdale uses February 14-18. Forsyth uses February 18-22. Douglas County's draft shows February 21-24. This is not a metro-wide travel week.
Not ready for booking yet:
- Fulton County and Clayton County families: Wait for official 2027-2028 calendars. Booking against 2026-2027 dates and assuming they carry forward creates unnecessary risk.
- Douglas County families: The draft dated August 2025 has not been finalized. Wait for the board-approved calendar.
- Fall Break travel for any district: While the dates in the comparison table come from official calendars, Fall Break is the most volatile break period in Georgia school calendars. A district that shifts its Fall Break by one week between calendar years can do so again if the calendar is amended.
Camp registration window note. Spring Break 2028 camp slots will fill at the same time across the entire metro area because every district shares the same week. Spring Break camp slots for 2028 open on each provider's schedule. Early registration matters more than usual this year because every district in the metro area shares the same Spring Break week. The demand concentration is predictable and universal.
Frequently Asked Questions
When does the 2027-2028 school year start in Metro Atlanta?
First days range from August 2 to August 5, 2027. Cobb, DeKalb, APS, Cherokee, Henry, CSD, and Rockdale start Monday, August 2. Paulding starts Tuesday, August 3. Gwinnett and Marietta City start Wednesday, August 4. Forsyth starts Thursday, August 5.
When is Spring Break 2028 in Metro Atlanta?
Spring Break is April 3-7, 2028 across all eleven Metro Atlanta districts with official 2027-2028 calendars. This is a full alignment — no district in this guide has a different Spring Break week.
When is Thanksgiving Break 2027 in Metro Atlanta?
Thanksgiving Break is November 22-26, 2027 across all eleven official districts. This is the most consistently aligned break across Metro Atlanta.
Does Gwinnett County have a different February break than other districts for 2027-2028?
Yes. Gwinnett's February Student/Teacher Holidays run February 11-15, 2028. The majority of other Metro Atlanta districts — Cobb, DeKalb, APS, Cherokee, Henry, Marietta City, CSD, and Paulding — have their February break the following week, February 21-25. Rockdale's Winter Intersession falls February 14-18. Forsyth's Student Holiday falls February 18-22. These four windows create a 10-day spread with varying degrees of overlap.
Why is Paulding County's Winter Break shorter in 2027-2028?
Paulding County's 2027-2028 Winter Break runs December 20-31, 2027, ending three weekdays earlier than the December 20-January 3 standard the other districts follow. The district has not published an explanation for the shorter break. The practical result: Paulding students return Monday, January 3, 2028, while other districts return Tuesday, January 4.
Which Metro Atlanta districts have not published 2027-2028 calendars?
Fulton County Schools and Clayton County Schools have not released 2027-2028 calendars as of July 2026. Fulton is the fourth-largest district in Georgia; Clayton is a major south metro district. Booking 2027-2028 travel for a Fulton or Clayton student before those calendars are published means relying on an assumption, not a district calendar. Families in these two districts need official dates before locking in plans.
Is Douglas County's 2027-2028 calendar final?
No. Douglas County's 2027-2028 calendar is a draft dated August 2025. The dates are not board-approved. Draft dates can change. Douglas families should treat the draft as a watch list, not a final booking calendar.
Did Cobb County remove Digital Learning Days from the 2027-2028 calendar?
The official Cobb County 2027-2028 calendar does not list Digital Learning Days or early release days. The 2026-2027 calendar listed four DLDs and eight early release days. Whether this reflects a policy change or a difference in how the 2027-2028 calendar was published is not stated in the source document.
How many Digital Learning Days does Gwinnett County have in 2027-2028?
Gwinnett County has two Digital Learning Days in 2027-2028: September 17, 2027 and March 17, 2028. This is down from three DLDs in 2026-2027. The November DLD was removed; the September and March pattern remains.
Can I book Spring Break 2028 travel now?
For the eleven official districts in this preview, yes: April 3-7, 2028 is the published Spring Break window and the strongest travel week in the article. Fulton and Clayton families should wait for their district calendars. Douglas families should treat the draft as provisional until the final calendar is approved.
When will Fulton County release its 2027-2028 calendar?
As of July 2026, Fulton County Schools has not announced a release date for the 2027-2028 calendar. Fulton typically publishes its calendar in the fall or winter of the preceding school year. The Georgia School Calendar site updates district calendar pages as new official calendars become available.
