About Walker County Schools
Walker County Schools counted 8,082 K–12 students in a county system with two different lower-grade patterns. Most attendance areas use a K–5 elementary school followed by a grades 6–8 middle school and then LaFayette or Ridgeland High. Saddle Ridge School keeps kindergarten through eighth grade together, so students in that zone delay the first campus change until high school.
Jurisdiction adds another layer. Chickamauga City Schools operates independently inside Walker County, and city residents follow its own elementary-middle-high sequence. Walker’s policy also separates in-district out-of-zone requests from nonresident enrollment; the published nonresident tuition is $400 per student.
A Walker County mailing address is only a starting point for identifying the school route. The home may fall within Chickamauga’s municipal system, a conventional Walker elementary-middle feeder or the Saddle Ridge K–8 zone. Transfer status is a separate question after jurisdiction and the assigned pattern have been established.
